What is OpenClaw?
OpenClaw is an MIT-licensed personal AI agent that runs on your own machine or server rather than as a hosted service. You connect messaging channels such as Telegram, WhatsApp or Slack, and route messages to one or more agents through a local control plane called the Gateway; 'skills' let it act — triaging an inbox, drafting posts, reviewing code, driving a browser. Created by PSPDFKit founder Peter Steinberger, it launched in November 2025 as Warelay, was renamed OpenClaw at the end of January 2026, and became one of the fastest-growing projects in GitHub history at over 380,000 stars. It is now run by a non-profit. There is no subscription: you supply your own model API key.
